Students at Hereford Cathedral School are celebrating today after almost 60% achieved no less than a B grade in their A Level results and twenty-three students (26%) secured all A*/A grades. This included a number of students who joined HCS Sixth Form from other schools, such as Loran A, Ogden Scholar and former Head Girl at Whitecross High School, who achieved two As and a B.
Five sixth formers achieved at least three A* grades. Hannah M (who joined from Earl Mortimer School) and Helen B both sat four A Levels, each securing three A*s and one A.
Hannah will study Natural Sciences at Durham University and Helen will read Medicine at Oxford University. Anna S achieved A* grades in English Literature and Language, Biology and Maths. Andy M secured A*s in Economics, Fine Art and Maths and Maisy S will go to Warwick to read Maths having secured 3 A*s.
Briony S (pictured above) gained three As in Economics, Geography, and Biology; plus a B in Chemistry, which she achieved in just a year.
She said: “After Year 12, I decided I wanted to study Medicine at university, so I needed Chemistry A Level. It was hard at first starting the A Level a year after everyone else, but I’m really pleased with my result.”
HCS’s head boy, Will B, and deputy heads Ellen O-D and Anna S (pictured below) collectively secured five A*s and four As. Will also plays rugby for England and currently has a contract with the Worcester Warriors.
Amelia M is celebrating a clean sweep in language-based A levels after she also secured an A* in English Literature and Language.
Amelia (pictured below) from Hereford said: “I have always been interested in the Japanese culture since I was quite little and once I got into it I really wanted to carry on.
“I have been to Japan once and I would really love to go again.”
Amelia is set to read Japanese and Spanish at Cardiff.
Rachael K (pictured below right), who achieved an A* and two As, will study Music at Cambridge University. Helen B (below left) secured three A*s and one A and is off to Oxford University to study Medicine.
Three of the school’s international students, Andy M, Jacqueline P and Alex H, also did very well, collectively achieving six A*s between them in a range of subjects including Art, Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Economics.
Headmaster, Paul Smith was very pleased with the results and said: “These are great results from students with a range of different abilities and aptitude, some of whom have joined us from other schools.
“The fact that some of our highest academic achievers have also excelled in various extra-curricular pursuits such as sport, music and drama is indicative of the overall level of participation, commitment and motivation shown by HCS students. With small class sizes, superb teaching and a variety of extra-curricular activities we are proud that our students can fulfil their potential both in, and out, of the classroom.”
